The First Monasteries: Whithorn and Iona

Christianity reached the lands we now call Scotland through traders, travellers and missionaries. In Galloway, St Ninian is traditionally linked with Whithorn, where a church known as Candida Casa — the white house — was established in the fifth or early sixth century. It was a landmark: a place of worship, teaching and welcome on a route between Ireland, Britain and the Continent.

In 563, St Columba arrived on Iona from Ireland. The monastery he founded was not a quiet retreat for solitary souls. It was a working community of monks, lay brothers, craftspeople and visitors. Prayer punctuated the day, but so did farming, copying manuscripts, cooking, carving and trading. Iona became one of the most influential religious centres in northern Europe.

A Network Across Land and Sea

Iona was a mother house with daughter foundations. Monks travelled by sea as easily as we travel by road. Applecross in Wester Ross, Kingarth on Bute and Eileach an Naoimh in the Garvellachs all looked to Iona or shared its traditions. These were placed on islands, promontories and coastlines, close to sea lanes and fertile land.

Not every early monastery was remote. St Serf gathered a community at Culross in Fife. St Mungo, or Kentigern, is associated with Glasgow. In Pictish lands, excavations at Portmahomack in Easter Ross and carved stones at Nigg reveal sophisticated monastic estates. Some sites began as timber churches and ended as great abbeys; others faded into fields.

Learning, Craft and Trade

Early monasteries were centres of learning. Scribes copied psalters, gospels and law texts in Latin and Gaelic. Scholars studied the computus — the complex calculation of Easter — as well as poetry, genealogy and biblical commentary. A monastery might train priests, welcome pilgrims and educate the children of local leaders.

Craft and trade were part of the same rhythm. Metalworkers made bells, shrines and reliquaries. Stone carvers raised crosses and grave slabs. Farms produced grain, cattle, cheese and wool. Ships brought wine, olive oil, glass and pottery from the Mediterranean and Gaul, while hides, wool and foodstuffs travelled out.

Beneath Later Religious Buildings

Many early monasteries lie beneath later churches, abbeys and cathedrals. Iona Abbey stands over Columba's early community. Whithorn Priory rose above Ninian's foundation. Glasgow Cathedral occupies ground linked to St Mungo. Culross Abbey replaced St Serf's community, and Melrose Abbey lies close to Old Melrose, an earlier monastic site.

When you visit a later religious building, look for early stones reused in walls, cross slabs built into masonry, or grave markers displayed in a porch or museum. These fragments are often the only surviving witnesses to the first monastery on the site. Ask locally; church guides and heritage centres often know which corner to check.

Quiet Fields, Remote Islands and Careful Visiting

Other early monasteries survive as earthworks in quiet fields or on remote islands. Eileach an Naoimh has low walls, cells and graves beside the sea. St Blane's on Bute has a peaceful enclosure and carved stones. Inchmarnock preserves traces of an early Christian community. Look for turf banks, enclosure ditches, old burial grounds and simple crosses.

Place names can guide you. Names beginning with kil-, cill-, annat- or disert- often point to early church sites. So can a lonely graveyard, a holy well or a strand where a saint is said to have landed.

If you go looking, go prepared. Check tide tables and weather forecasts. Wear boots that can handle bog and rock. Midges are fierce in summer, so take repellent. Do not remove stones, disturb graves or use a metal detector — it is illegal to detect on scheduled monuments without permission. Visit local museums and heritage centres to see finds in context. Above all, treat these places as living landscapes of memory. A quiet field, a ruined wall or a carved cross can still speak of prayer, work and welcome across fifteen hundred years.
